If you’re using the WP-Email plugin [previous version] for WordPress, be aware that a lot of extra pages will be indexed in Google as duplicate content unless you exclude crawling via robots.txt. The program creates a Javascript link to a PopUp Window which will be crawled as a seperate file (but duplicate content) for each of your posts. Here’s an example of the URL in Google:pp-content/plugins/email/wp-email-popup.php?p=44
The problem: a page like that is created for each of your posts, resulting in duplicate content and potential penalties.
The solution: it’s easy. Add the following to your robots.txt file, changing the filename where appropriate:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-content
This tells the robots to ignore any content that begins with the string ‘wp-content’ which includes the Popup. It may take a few months weeks for Google Crawler to obey your command, but they will and the content will drop out. I disallowed mine today, so I’ll be in a position to judge just how long it takes very soon, I hope. I’ll take a look at the rest of the indexed pages today and probably have some more recommendations for exclusions soon, but for sure this repetitive popup page isn’t needed.

One of the best things about many new ‘Web 2.0′ style sites is they offer a ton of unique opportunities for link building. Here’s a nice one I saw because of the presence of legendary uber-Commenter Easton Ellsworth. CoComment is a great way to keep of your conversations, and luckily, they’re nice enough to make the pages publicly accessible, so you can get some search engine love, as well. It doesn’t look like they link out to the ‘conversations’, but they do allow links in your profile. So a quick link to your CoComment Profile, and it becomes indexed. Then the links in your profile should count back to you. One 2.0 service that does allow direct links is del.icio.us. Again, make sure to link to the profile from somewhere that’s alread indexed. Once your profile is indexed in search engines, it’s like running your own mini-directory! You can add as many links as you want to this service. Another nice thing about del.icio.us is that you get a slight boost in traffic when you first add a link because you’re added to their recent page. It doesn’t last long. Let’s call it your 15 nanoseconds of fame.Another website that shows up as backlinks is Blogdigger. Again, make sure your group is accessible to the public and is linked to from an already indexed website, and you’ll be good to go. Blogdigger even pulls from RSS, so it’s constantly updated.
RSS scrapers can serve as a source of backlinks also, and even the occassional bit of traffic. You won’t need to recruit these guys, all you need is a heartbeat. You’ll find if you update often that your content is scraped endlessly. At least people who are linking back are following the protocol.

Don’t forget about offline advertising as part of a well balanced promotion campaign. Offline promotions help target people that might not see your online advertising. Here are some suggestions for promoting your business offline.
1. Business Cards. Business cards are still a great way to make contacts. They are small enough to carry with you and an easy way to give your contact information to people that you meet casually or through business dealings. Make sure that your business card has your websites URL and other important contact information.
2. Print Advertising Consider using traditional media such as newspapers, an industry newsletter, direct mailers, or a yellow pages listing. Print advertising has more longevity than PPC advertising in that people can save the ad for when they are ready to buy. Print advertising might also be passed along to friends or relatives. To make this sort of advertising sell, offer a limited time special offer that offers a discount or something free with their purchase.
3. Radio or TV advertising Radio or television ads put your business on the “œmainstream airwaves’. Many cable companies offer local advertising at affordable pricing and are happy to work with you to produce a quality advertising spot. With radio advertising, you can buy 30 or 60 second spots to showcase your product or service.
4. Plain old Word of Mouth. This is the best kind of advertising your business can hope to do. Your customers spread the word for you. Keep your customers happy and they’ll return again and again, and tell others to buy from you, too.
These things integrated with an effective online advertising campaign will rocket your sales and grow your business by leaps and bounds.
