What is a Blog?

Tags: Blogging, Tutorials | Deepanshu | 1 Comment »

Blog” is an abbreviated version of “weblog,” which is a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog is a frequently updated, personal website featuring diary-type commentary and links to articles on other Web sites. Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.

Many blogs focus on a particular topic, such as web design, home staging, sports, or mobile technology. Some are more eclectic, presenting links to all types of other sites. And others are more like personal journals, presenting the author’s daily life and thoughts.

Generally speaking (although there are exceptions), blogs tend to have a few things in common:

  • A main content area with articles listed chronologically, newest on top. Often, the articles are organized into categories.
  • An archive of older articles.
  • A way for people to leave comments about the articles.
  • A list of links to other related sites, sometimes called a “blogroll”.
  • One or more feeds like RSS, Atom or RDF files.

Some blogs may have additional features beyond these.

The Blog Content

Content is the essential purpose for any web site. Sites for Retail usually feature a catalog of products. University sites contain information about their campuses, curriculum, and faculty. News sites show the latest news stories. For a personal blog, you might have a bunch of observations, or reviews. Without some sort of updated content, there is little reason to visit a web site more than once.

On a blog, the content consists of posts (also sometimes called “articles” or “entries“) that the author(s) writes. Some blogs do have multiple authors, each writing his/her own articles. Typically, blog authors compose their articles in a web-based interface, built into the blogging system itself. A few blogging systems do support the use of stand-along blog client tools, allowing authors to write articles offline and then upload them at later time.

Comments

Want an interactive website? It’s always nice if the readers of a website could leave comments, tips or thoughts about the site or a specific article? With blogs, they can! Posting comments is one of the most exciting features of blogs.

Most blogs have a method to allow visitors to leave comments. There are also nifty ways for authors of other blogs to leave comments without even visiting the blog! called “pingbacks” or “trackbacks“, they can inform other bloggers whenever they cite an article from another site in their own articles. All this ensures that online conversations can be maintained painlessly among various site users and websites.

Yesterday, on wordpress development blog matt announced the launch of much awaited upgrade to WordPress after months of their hard work. As matt says “The result is a new way of interacting with WordPress that will remain familiar to seasoned users while improving the experience for everyone.”

Wordpress Dashboard Pic

New customizable dashboard is “focused on the most relevant tasks”

New navigation in “new design” separates the navigation bar into two namely primary functions and secondary functions, thus, reduces the “number of navigation options in half”.

Some other life saving functions are like “multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting”. All these will reduce a lot of burden from self hosted bloggers.

If you make frequent backups and you’re interested in helping us out with development by testing the new code, download and install Release Candidate 1 of WordPress 2.5

As they say personally they can’t wait, i have to say that Blogger’s Paradise is now proudly powered by WordPress 2.5.

WP Plugin: Where did they go from here?

If you have been paying attention to Amazon’s single product pages and if Amazon’s engineers have been doing their job well, you have most likely clicked on one of the links in the group of deep links called “Customers who bought this item also bought”.

This plugin tries to create a similar group of links for your blog. If you have enough links in your theme (Contextual Related Posts plugin comes in handy) for readers to explore, then as and when readers click on links, this plugin checks to see if it was referred from your blog, checks to see if it can identify a post or a page from the information it has and then adds a link to the referring page. I have been testing it on this blog for a few days while I iron out the bugs. Check out the pages and what grabs readers’ attention on various pages and posts.

Installation is very simple, just download, unzip, upload and activate. The plugin should automatically add the list to the bottom of every single page right before the comment form. Please refer to the plugin file for troubleshooting hints. Future development plans include an admin page to control the number of links, autoplacement etc.

Please let us know if you are using the plugin and whether you like it. Bugs should be posted here.
